Marine terms, translated.
We respect the domain. Here are the words the industry uses, in the plain English a software buyer needs.
- PDI
- Pre-delivery inspection. The check performed before handing a vessel to a customer or returning it to availability.
- Haul-out
- Removing a vessel from the water for inspection, service, or storage.
- Splash
- Putting a vessel back in the water after haul-out or commissioning.
- Commissioning
- Preparing a new or seasonally stored vessel for active service.
- Winterization
- Preparing a vessel to survive winter storage, including engine, fuel, and water systems.
- Reciprocity
- Member privileges to access boats at clubs other than their home club.
- Transient
- A short-term boater using a slip or service on a non-seasonal basis.
- Slip
- A designated parking space at a dock.
- Fleet utilization
- The share of available boat-hours that are actually used by members or customers.
- Fault code
- A structured error emitted by a marine engine's onboard diagnostics.
- A2P 10DLC
- US compliance framework for application-to-person SMS over long-code numbers.
- Opt-in
- Documented member consent to receive automated messaging.
- Cohort comparison
- Measuring a group defined by shared behavior over time — for example, members who joined in Q1.
- LTV
- Lifetime value. The expected revenue a member will generate over the length of their membership.
- Churn
- The rate at which members leave the club, marina, or service.
- NOAA
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The US source for marine weather and tide data.
- SmartCraft
- Mercury Marine's telemetry and diagnostics protocol for outboard engines.
- MFD
- Multi-function display. A chartplotter and systems screen at the helm.
- Retell
- A voice-AI infrastructure used to build telephony-grade AI agents.
- Fleetio
- Fleet management software used to track vessels, parts, and work orders.
- GoMeddo
- Salesforce-native reservation and booking software used by boat clubs and marinas.
- Salesforce
- The CRM that many Freedom Boat Club franchisees run as their system of record.
- SOC 2
- A trust-services audit evaluating security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy.
- DPA
- Data Processing Addendum. The contract governing how a vendor handles customer data.
- AMS
- Application Management System — in MarineOps, the full service workflow from intake to invoice.
- Dry stack
- A storage structure where vessels are stacked indoors or under cover between trips.
- Wet slip
- A dock space where a boat floats in the water between trips.
- CSR
- Customer service representative. The person historically on the other end of the member phone call.
- Tenant isolation
- Architectural separation that prevents one customer's data from being visible to another.
- Zone resolver
- In the Fishing Companion, the routine that maps a GPS coordinate to a fishing regulation zone.
